Transloading is quoted per container once we see the packing list, because carton count, whether the box is floor-loaded, and the number of outbound splits are what actually drive the work. THE CLOCK
Why Transload Speed Is a Cost Line, Not a Convenience
Every hour an import container sits is billable to someone, and it is usually you. This is the part of transloading that does not show up on a rate sheet.
Port Houston gives each container a short stretch of free time at the terminal. Once that runs out, demurrage starts accruing per container per day, and the daily rate steps up the longer the box stays on the ground. The clock does not care that your warehouse is booked.
Pull the container out and a second clock starts. Detention runs on the box and the chassis from the moment they leave the terminal until the empty is returned, so a container parked at a slow warehouse bleeds money on both the equipment and the drayage driver waiting on it.
That is the real argument for transloading through a warehouse 10 minutes from the terminals. Short drayage, an unload that starts the day the box lands, and an empty returned the same day means both clocks stop early. The freight moves onto cheaper domestic trucks and the equipment goes back where it belongs.
Transload vs. warehousing
If the freight already has a buyer, a DC appointment, or an FBA shipment plan, transloading is almost always cheaper than receiving it into storage and picking it back out later. What is transloading?
Transloading is transferring freight from one transportation mode or vehicle to another, typically from an ocean container onto domestic trucks. We unload your container, palletize and sort the freight, and reload it onto outbound trucks bound for FBA, retail DCs, or your own facilities.

How much does transloading cost in Houston?

A SKU or destination split. As cartons come off the container they are sorted by SKU, PO, or ship-to, then built into a separate pallet set for each outbound truck. That is the difference between transloading and cross-docking: we reconfigure the freight rather than just moving it truck to truck.
